His lack of explosion at times is perplexing, but after scouring and scrutinizing his high school, college, and summer league footage, I've come to the conclusion that he's just not that guy who you throw lobs to. Or will rise up and slam on people out of nowhere.
It's something to keep an eye on to see if he can develop that, but he doesn't really need it as part of his game to be effective.
He's an unusual player and I think those of us who watched summer league will not be surprised by certain things. He's going to wow with the spectacular plays, like saving a ball going out of bounds and firing a pass to Achuiwa for the dunk. But then he'll underwhelm you when he rushes a layup and misses instead of going up strong to slam it. I suspect that he's not as good at jump-off 2 feet as he is 1. And I think he might have some weakness in his range of motion. Maybe he needs to do full-range squats to shore up some weaknesses in his legs.
Overall he does so many great things and helps the team win in so many ways, you'll live with some of the warts. I'm hoping he can get those things tightened up though. His mid-range shot is looking like a weapon already.
He's more of an orchestrator than a finisher at this point. But he can absolutely get better there and I expect that with reps and NBA training he will.
