I think its pretty safe to assume Cade won't be playing in the opener at this point. The team was pretty clear he needed to have a few full practices under his belt from memory, and that doesn't appear to have happened yet. However, there is no benefit for the team to rule him out this far before the game, as you said, its just going to hurt ticket prices and hype for the game.
JEIII the Pistons beat writer for the Athletic was speculating on his podcast that Cade would be back by the 4th or so game this season. Either way, its not a huge deal for me, but I do think he'll miss the first few games
That's the thing, this isn't some normal player that they're being coy about. This is the first Pistons #1 pick since 1970, a player that the fanbase has been thirsting for since Grant Hill, and all they give the fans all preseason and now leading right up to the game is "He'll play when he plays". That's some BS IMO.
These paying customers, who essentially pay their salaries btw, deserve some insight as to what's going on with Cade yet here everybody is wondering what's going on the day before opening night. Is he playing opening night? Is he out for the next week? Next month? What's the exact injury? We're getting none of this and I doubt this is some strategic play to throw off the opposition. There's tape of him practicing but that doesn't really mean much in terms of real game readiness. I don't know, it's a bit frustrating being left in the dark about the franchise player we've all been dying to see in real game action.
