Pretty much this. We’ll win more games with Fred putting up 10 shots than we will with him putting up 20.
I would say you have the causation reversed. If the team is playing well, Fred would not need to put up that many shots because his preference is to give up the ball and get others involved. The games he puts up a lot of shots in are those where the team as a whole is struggling and as one of the better ball handlers and shooters on the team, Fred feels he has no choice but to try and make something happen. Of course he knows his strengths are not in 1 v 1 basketball but when your offense is stalling, you have to do something. You can’t just dump it off to inferior less experienced players who are worse shooters and hope for the best. Hence the high volume shots associated with losses.
Hopefully with Barnes development and Pascal soon returning and OG eventually adding to his game, he will have fewer times he feels he needs to do this.
Fred’s strengths are being a key cog in 5 man sets and when all 5 guys are playing their roles well, Fred shines on fewer shots and the team wins.
