Payton was one of the worst defenders in the league last year so to act like he was better is silly. I think it's more Fournier causing the problem. We're used covering for poor PG defense but not bad SG/SF defense Bullocks was an important piece to our defense last season and Fournier may not be horrible but he ain't good and he ain't a positive team defender out there.
Net rating after three games:
Kemba: -9.2
Fournier: +8.0
Kemba is killing us.
Yes but we were used to that last season too and made due so it can't be that is the issue. There's only one other difference to the starting 5. Fournier has good offensive impact but I think overall we can't cover for 2 bad team defenders instead of 1 like last year.
Fournier is a downgrade from Bullock defensively. But he's a major upgrade offensively.
I agree that the Knicks can't cover for two minus defenders. They needed a defensive point guard to make up for Fournier's deficiencies.
Kemba so far hasn't played well on either end, and it shows in the statistics. His defensive problems matter more than Fournier's because he doesn't make up for them on the offensive end of the floor.
But all those issues come up when you sign average players in free agency. If Fournier was a good defender, he would have been in high-demand in free agency, and he would've cost a lot more than we signed him for. But signing guys like him is exactly what treadmill teams do, because at the end of the day, he's just an average starter in the NBA. And signing average starters without a superstar on your roster will turn you into a treadmill team.
