Both players probably won't make the league if they are not related to a star player.

I really hate this sort of cynical logic that I see from people.

On one level, there's truth in it: Obviously if your dad was in the NBA, you're more likely to dedicate yourself to basketball and see it as an actual career.

But the implication of these statements is either nepotism, or overrating, or both, and I really just don't see it. A guy like Payton, or Seth Curry, is seen by scouts from a young age and they basically turned their nose up at him. From that point onward, if Payton isn't someone who fights hard for everything he gets, if Payton at all feels like he has an ego because of who his dad is, he's done. No GM wants to brag about the fact that he's bringing in a great player's son on their team. It earns them no kudos, and it guarantees allegations of nepotism/overrating from the peanut gallery.

Payton had to fight for what he's gotten and he deserves our applause. No one's saying he's going to be like his father, but he has carved out his own niche, and for that we should be taking inspiration not looking to smugly show how smart we are.

100%. I think him being The Glove's son worked against him in terms of assessment. People wanted to see the next coming of the great Gary Payton and instead they saw a guy who was a borderline professional player coming out of college. I imagine that disappointment carried over in some way among fans, scouts, and coaches, even if just incrementally.

The guy has battled to get his roster spot and become a solid NBA rotational player at age 29. That's not easy to do, as most would've given up (particularly one who has financial support if he really needs it). Gotta respect the man.

He’s found a role that suits what he can contribute and the premise of this thread is complete hyperbole but some of you are some miserable mofos hating on a dude that’s done nothing but work his butt off to secure a spot in the league.

He is maximizing the gravity provided by playing with Curry. He is contributing as a micro ball 5 at times

Nemanja, Porter and Payton shooting an efficient 50% from 3

Curry and Draymond set the tone in terms of what the rest of the team should do with passing, effort, and mindset. Kerr and the coaching staff implement the system and strategy for newcomers. It's what makes guys who aren't cutting it in other places succeed in Golden State generally (as long as they have the discipline within them to do it).

Kind of reminds me of the Nets using Bruce Brown as their roll man last year.

That's the best summary of Payton II's role on this Warriors team. He's a vertical spacing guard that the Warriors use as a roll man and cutter off-ball.

Payton has been amazing, give the guy a ton of credit for his grind and ability. Let's also give Kerr & Myers credit, lots of people including team vets to want us to keep Avery Bradley and they believed in GP2.

Steve knows when Gary's skills are maximized and puts him in spots to succeed.

Supposedly it was Meyers who was the main guy fighting for him. I believe it because Kerr always has always preferred veterans over “rookies” with his minutes.

If it was, good for him. Myers doesn't get enough credit, even from the Warriors fanbase.

"Playing hard" is a skill too, as availability.

Kudos to The Mitten, I always liked him and I'm so happy seeing him getting him chance, he belongs in the NBA, he's a NBA-caliber player.

Kerr just said they're gonna guarantee his contract for the rest of the season, well deserved!

Would have been shocking if they didn't, but I'll bet he's glad to get it done. If they don't put Lee on waivers tomorrow, he'll be guaranteed also.
