Less rim protection out by the 3pt line meaning more rim protection near the rim, a center who has the size and want to make teams pay for switching smaller guys on him and of course something new this era, a center willing to shoot open 3s.
Now without a center like Bam means less switching overall and could lead to some open shots on picks and of course Miami will be missing an athletic big player who can get some easy ally-oops off pick and rolls and knock down midrange shots (when he's actually looking for them).
It's going to be very interesting to see the contrast of going from a max contract switchable yet undersized center to a vet minimum more traditional center with the ability to shoot 3s.
I think Spo got so fed up with Whiteside not stepping up to defend the pick n pop he just said screw if we’re making Bam center and switching Non stop
From my understanding, before Bam was even drafted (2017) Miami was in love with his switchability. Looking at the lineup combos, I don't see much if any time with Bam and Whiteside on the court together, much like Bam and Precious last year. Miami wanting to change their ways happened when they were able to draft Bam.
What I believe is that with Bam this coaching staff saw a unique opportunity go to a full switching defense which in theory means you can go smaller at PF which "should" create more mismatches and possibly better shooting (which they've not really taken advantage of). When Precious was drafted, I didn't expect him to play with Bam and he didn't even though people wanted him to, he was to be the system's backup switchable center and now he's gone which possibly says something about the future of this current system.
With Dedmon doing so well last year for Miami at Center for a vet minimum player, maybe there is some doubt of going all switchable is the best move to build a team. They did let Precious go without having a backup locked up behind Bam. It's just going to be interesting to see how good this team can be with such a massive downgrade at center although the system possibly changes to make better use of a more traditional center.
