Bill Walton only played 58 games in 77-78 and won Mvp, seems unlikely it'd happen in this era tho.

No, he's not. He's missed 3 games due to Injury and rest, and missed the rest due to COVID. Probably want to mention that technicality.

He missed 20 full days due to Covid recovery at the start of the season? That seems like an awfully long time to recover (compared to other NBA players), does he have underlying physical issues that extended that recovery period?

In any case, he will not be reaching 70 games played unless he somehow plays 32 straight (has he ever done that in his career?), so based on previous winners, it would be hard to justify giving him the award. And that's with 70 games played, the further we get from that, the harder it becomes to justify.

LMAO, are you serious right now? Some of the healthiest people on the planet, have had Covid and it took them a very long time to recover. Now I know you're trolling.

Guess what, the media votes for him, and not a single one has mentioned the lack of games played as being an issue so far this season. In fact, the most recent articles, and betting sites, have Embiid as the favorite. So far all of your BS about missed games, there doesnt' seem to be much being mentioned by the media about it, because they know that almost every player outside of Jokic and Curry have been affected by Covid, so to count that as some sort of a penality would be incredibly unfair.

It seems odd that a peak athlete like Embiid would miss 20 full days due to Covid - are there any other NBA players that missed that much time due to strictly Covid?

All my "BS about missed games", ahh, wasn't that the main excuse by Sixers fans why Embiid didn't win MVP last year? "IF he played more!" Was Covid not a thing last year? Maybe I'm mis-remembering?

So if Embiid wins it this year despite missing 20 games (trajectory right now), you'll have to admit that the games played argument for last year was BS, right? Or will you shift the goalposts?

Ron Swanson wrote:Fair enough. This all seems like semantics though, because I can't remember the last time raw plus-minus was used over Per-100 in an actual, serious MVP discussion. And that's coming from someone who even has his own issues with using lineup data of any kind as gospel. I'm not going to completely disregard it, but look no further than last year (Gobert, Mike Conley, Joe Ingles, and Royce O'neal are #1-4 in the entire league...) to illustrate how much (or in this case, little) stock we should put into it.

So, it's understandable that you're not used to seeing it, but it's something I talked about a lot last year as I criticized the way Gobert's MVP candidacy got dismissed.

To be clear: It's not like I only use raw +/- in my analysis, it's just that it's something everyone can understand. I wouldn't use it where I thought it misleading, but whenever you see one star player with super-high raw +/- and the rest of his teammates aren't close, that player is going to look great by any more sophisticated analysis too.

Again, not saying I give my MVP nod to whoever has the highest raw +/-, but it is something I make a point to look at and I don't dismiss it lightly.

As of now, Embiid is clear cut favorite.

Embiid gets my vote. The way he has carried his team even through the ongoing Simmons drama is incredible.

And of the 3 top MVP contenders, he is actually my least favorite player.

To be fair to Embiid, half his missed games were due to COVID. If I had a bet, it would be that he gets injured during the second half but he's been relatively healthy this year.

I don't think you can compare this year to others were the league basically forced people to sit out when they couldve played in prior years. Giannis has missed 10 games as well. Jokic got lucky so far only missing 5(?) games while having Covid in the summer but who knows, he might have his immunity lapse and out for a week or so.

Forget who you WANT to win it....

Who do you think WILL win it? Regardless of your personal feelings.

I think Jokic takes it back to back. It’s just so obvious when I see him play, the game is literally looking like child’s play to him, it’s absurd.

Right now I have Embiid since the numbers are close and his team is much better playoff position. Nuggets lost last night

Closest MVP race in a while. Completely open for Jokic, Curry, Embiid and Giannis to steal it post ASB.

People are smoking that peace pipe if they think Jokic is the front runner, it’s Embiid no doubt about it, 2nd seed and could take the 1st seed soon.

Could go the other way too with the Sixers dropping the game today. East is bunched up, so it's possible that any of the top 6 teams finish anywhere from 1-6. This is why we're getting to a stage where I feel as though we're starting to move away from team record, as all records are thereabouts now amongst the contenders.

Loved these YouTube comments:

A: "JOKIC IS LIKE SEEING A UNICORN WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE SAYING HE'S JUST A HORSE"

B: "No it's like people acknowledge he's a unicorn but say he's not as good as that other unicorn and then point at a donkey"

Even if you move away from team record, Embiid has the narrative. To be playing this well, and propping up the team this much with all the BS drama is insane.
