You're missing some nuance.
I don't think he should be forcing shots but I don't think he should be turning down open 3s in games we're not that interested in winning, even if turning them down is the right play.
Why? Because turning down shots gets into a player's head. It's the ultimate confirmation of "I can't do this". If the coach tells you not to shoot them the player is thinking "Nobody believes I can do this".
On the other hand, if the coach is encouraging you to put it up, the player thinks "This is just a matter of practice, everyone can see I'm actually a good shooter".
Now if Suggs wanted to put up an off the dribble step back with Tyebulle in his jersey? I would say no but uncontested threes aren't that.
Depends. Passing up an open 3 can also mean you’re confident it will go in but we are trying to lose games. So why shoot?
