Why would we do that?

Because he carried a team to the playoffs last season, made all-NBA, and is on a team friendly deal for three more seasons. That's the upside.

But, he regressed this season and is a questionable fit with Cade, imo. I'd probably be a no, but it's not a ridiculous proposal.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

His defense would drive Piston fans insane. After 8 years there are still questions about his maturity, commitment & bball IQ. There is literally a thread on the Knicks board right now titled "Julius Randle the most unlikable player in the entire league".

The talent is undeniable, but that's not somebody I want in our lockerroom.

Yesterday's game got me thinking, we could really use 2 guys from the Knicks, Randle is not one of them, and they shouldn't be difficult to get. One obviously is Mitchell Robinson, who had 5 blocks and bothered us a lot with his interior presence, he also got 9 rebounds in less than 30 mins.

The other guy is Alec Burks who has been playing great defense for Thibs, is super versatile, have good size, is strong, can play PG/SG/SF on both sides of the floor and has been shooting almost 40% from 3 this season and is a 38% 3 point shooter in his career.

Mitchell Robinson / Isaiah Stewart / Luka Garza
Paolo Banchero / Marvin Bagley /
Jerami Grant / Saddiq Bey / Isaiah Livers
Alec Burks / Hamidou Diallo / Frank Jackson
Cade Cunningham / Corey Joseph / Killian Hayes

We draft Paolo Banchero or Jabari Smith with a top 5 pick
We trade Kelly Olynyk and all those 2nds we got from Brooklyn to the Knicks for Alec Burks.
We let Frank Jackson go and we bring Luka Garza back.
We bring Bagley back.
We sign Mitchell Robinson.

I think Bey should start tho and I am not sure if we have enough minutes for all 4 of the rookie/Grant/Bey/Bagley.

That starting 5 would be good on defense and spacing would be good.

Why would the Knicks want to trade Robinson and Burks? And yes, that's a serious question, not sarcastic. I don't follow other teams so I'm always interested in learning what the other team's motivation is for making the trade if it isn't explicitly stated in the post. Helps me to understand if it's an idea worth getting behind/excited about if it makes sense and could actually have some legs.

Weren't we rumored to be interested in Robinson at the deadline? But imagine we wouldn't give up much when we could sign him this offseason?

NY made a huge mistake using all of their cap on their own guys imo so that could make Robinson expendable.

Yeah, Robinson is about to be an UFA while the Knicks are essentially capped out around $120 mil. They certainly could pay to keep him. It's the Knicks. But it would cost them a pretty penny, so it really just comes down to how much they actually value him. They are a mediocre club either way. *shrug*

I know a lot of people like him as a shotblocker, but I wouldn't be shocked if the Knicks pony up. Believe it or not the Knicks actually have one of the lower salary totals in the league right now. The top 3rd of the league is projected to be over $180 mil. BKN is at $191 mil. GS $209 mil. NY has never been a team to shy away from handing out big contracts to bigmen. It might actually be easier to pry Ayton away, even though it would cost twice as much. Phx will have a limit.

Hartenstein could be cheaper and better. Probably just a tad cheaper and a tad better, but still.

Robinson is gone, they didn't make him a RFA, so next season he will be an UFA, Olynyk could get some of his minutes. Kinda similar to what happened with Greg Monroe a few years ago for us IIRC.

Knicks fans said Noel and Mitchell strengths and weaknesses overlap too much, and they could use someone different, someone with KO skillset could be usefull for them.

Also Thibs is not known for developing young players and Mitchell while very good at some things, is still very bad at others and could benefit from Casey/Ben Wallace/John Beilein.

Burks is a veteran, who is solid but nothing special, if you watched the game, you probably noticed they have Quickley, who should be getting more minutes and imo should be starting for them.

Rose should be back from his injury next season, and they paid big money to sign Fournier and they just paid a 1st to acquire Cam Reddish. So they shouldn't miss Burks minutes at the wings. Between Reddish/Fournier/IQ/Rose and Barrett they should be good at the 1-3.

They'd be getting 3 2nds for him, which is not a lot but it's something, we traded Bullock for a lot less than that.
