I’ve been giving this a lot of thought as I’ve been evaluating Chet throughout the course of the season and the difficulty I have with the constant debate around Chet’s body, is I actually think his body is what makes him valuable.
His weight, at his size, allows for him to be incredibly springy. It’s why he’s such a relentless shotblocker and is able to constantly get second and third jumps while going after shots, rebounds, and putbacks. I think it’s also why hes able to effortlessly glide up and down the court on both ends. His developed handle certainly helps, and is better than Bari’s, but I’m convinced his size is an even bigger factor.
So many of the talking heads automatically just pencil him in as a longterm 5 who will need to pack on 50 pounds and I don’t get it. If I’m drafting Chet, I want him to maintain that springiness, as he’s a somewhat average athlete by NBA standards, which is why I’d much prefer to develop him as a 4 longterm next to a bigger 5 (in the Lopez/Giannis mold) so that I can maintain so much of what makes him the intriguing prospect that he is.
If you think he’s just going to crumble because of his frame, fine. But in that case he will regardless of what weight he’s at. I just think there’s a lot of nuance being lost in the whole Chet discussion right now.
