I always felt the whole "war chest" thing was over exaggerated. They had a lot of picks. They didn't have a lot of good picks.

Ainge held on to some picks in hopes they'd turn out great and they ended up not. I remember people drooling over the Memphis and Sac picks. I personally think he was deathly afraid of losing trades and so he held on to them. And once he drafted guys he took forever to accept that some were busts even though Brad was probably trying to convince him.

Yeh those picks could've been way better. Unfortunately, Memphis lucked into Ja the year before and the Kings had a one year jump, somehow going 39-43 after only having 27 wins the year before and then 31 wins the year after.

Instead of Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith, it could've very easily been Tyler Herro and Tyrese Haliburton (who I was praying the Celtics would move up for).

Ainge is one of the elite GMs in the NBA, and has been for quite a while.

He executes his plans very well. He's bold when he needs to be, and manages to find value on the fringes as well. Couples misses of course, but no one this side of Red is perfect.

Picking Brown at three was generally considered a slight reach. He was most commonly mocked around number 7.

Picking 3 in that draft, and 1 the year after, very few people would have seen us coming out of it with either Tatum or Brown, much less both.

I never saw him as being afraid of losing trades. I saw it more that he was convinced we needed a superstar, and he was saving his ammo for that. Felt like we were forever waiting for KD to sign, or for Kyrie to help recruit AD or something.

In the end, that didn't work, and the picks were of less value than we might have hoped, in and of themselves.

Kinda got forced down the homegrown route. So I don't give him much credit for choosing this path, but I do give him credit for Brown and Tatum in particular, plus Smart, Williams, Williams, etc, as others have mentioned.

I have COVID so I’m isolating away from my family and have a **** ton of spare time. I was reading the Jaylen Brown extension thread and not only did you post in it, you didn’t like the extension.

Getting paid way more than they are worth motivates a player to have a big year? Wasn’t that the logic behind offering Wiggins an albatross? I can understand a player’s free agency could become a big talking point if the player is an All Star or a likely one (e.g. Tatum), but we are talking about Jaylen Brown. There has also been talk about the Hawks having interest in him, but they just used two top 10 draft picks on wings. Who else was targeting him at the price he is supposedly commanding?
