You’re reading my mind here.
I feel like McNair was probably reluctant to do a future first at the deadline because he had not nailed down Sabonis and didn’t know what that would look like.
But once the team went into its current look and he had an idea of what his foundation looked like Collins now makes too much basketball sense as far as overall improvement goes not to do that. As well you already know what he’s costing you and how long so you can work around his money. And he’s locked up for a while so no need to be sweating the usual “is he going to walk from Sac” routine.
That still leaves us sitting with #4 and plenty of other parts/money that is easily moveable. A nice position to be in to make the leap to playoff contender.
And yet a massive whole at the 3. I know we all want to fill the 4 spot, but IMO its much harder to fill that 3 spot in the current NBA.
It's easier to sell a 3 and D wing on signing here when you can show them this
Fox
Ivey
*This is YOU*
Collins
Sabonis
Which 3&D D wing is available? Kyle Anderson is the only arguable one, and he probably fits better as a 4 in today's NBA.
Couldn't we do the same thing but with Barnes?
Fox
Ivey
Barnes
*This is YOU*
Sabonis
Oh and btw we still have our future 1st + Holmes/Holiday to swing for another good player.
Idk IMO, the majority of the guys available via trade/free agency are going to be 4's not 3's. OPJ, Anderson, Grant, Morris, Kuzma.. These guys are all 4's.
Also what exactly did Collins do better than Barnes last year? They were very similar players. Edge to Collins on Rebounding/Interior defense/Age.. Edge to Barnes on efficiency, perimeter defense, 3pt shooting, price.
I don't mind the Ivey/Collins strategy, but the deal should be re-routing Holmes to a 3rd team for value + a future 1st.
LAC out: Morris
LAC in: Len, Holmes
ATL out: Collins
ATL in: Holiday, Morris, Future Kings 1st
Sac out: Holmes, Len, Holiday, Future 1st
Sac in: Collins
This gets us Collins without having a massive hole at the 3 spot that is practically unfillable. We can still target OPJ or Anderson to help backup the forward spot.
Fox/Mitchell
Ivey/Davis
Barnes/Harkless
Collins/OPJ
Sabonis/Jones
