Re: C Mike Tobey signed
It's probably a non-guaranteed camp body deal. The 76'ers, Raptors, etc. use it as a way to pay their d-league guys more than the paltry sum that is permitted under the current CBA. I hope we do this with a few more guys that we want to play for the Swarm.

Re: C Mike "Spiderman" Tobey signed
He's only 21 (turns 22 in October). At the combine he measured 7' in shoes and with a wingspan of...you guessed it...7'.
From DE on his summer league play:
I'm ok with it.
From DE on his summer league play:
Tobey, the undrafted rookie out of the University of Virginia followed up his impressive Portsmouth Invitational with another solid showing at the Orlando Summer League. Although his college statistics were underwhelming, Tobey was an integral, yet inconsistent, piece for Tony Bennett throughout his four years at Virginia. Where Tobey excels is on the offensive glass, using his excellent hands and solid frame (7'1, 252) to clean up around the rim. He led the Orlando Summer League (for anyone who played more than one game) in offensive rebounds per 40 minutes with an impressive 6.9. Tobey found other ways to contribute on the offensive end finishing on dump-offs, rolls to the basket, and flashing some development of a mid-range pick and pop game. Tobey has some limitations due to his lack of length and stand out athletic ability, but he is a skilled 7-footer who is still only 21-years old, so he'll get some looks at the next level. He will have to be more consistent with his approach and overall toughness than what he displayed at times at Virginia, but based on the early returns we're seeing outside of the strict confines of their system, there may still be quite a bit of upside left for Tobey to tap into as he enters his mid-20s.
I'm ok with it.

The Swarm starting front-court is going to be pretty formidable.

oh well, I'll delete my thread, but I'm still renaming this one
Does he deserve his own thread? Hell no. Did I make it anyway, I sure did, thanks to a great joke made by @Hornetsgifs during the summer league.

It's the second time it's been renamed in its twenty-minute lifespan. I didn't include the "Spider-Man" thing in the original, guess it was a different mod.

That was me, cause of this exchange with SWedd: http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?p=48516350#p48516350
I kinda like the Office reference though. We need to vote on someone to be the official thread title decider.

We should get Quinn Cook out of Ohio next. And hopefully cut Roberts once we realize Cook is the better player.

Re: Goodbye Tobey - the Mike Tobey Thread
How was this guy in the summer league? Stats were decent when I box score watched, but I don't bother watching the summer league anymore.
We now have a glorious (and blindingly white) quartet of Zeller, Hawes, Kaminsky, and Tobey in the frontcourt.

I think Roy Hibbert would object to that characterization, as do I. He was born in Jamaica, by the way.

Re: Goodbye Tobey - the Mike Tobey Thread
Major UVa fan here.
Don't follow the NBA as closely as college, but would consider Charlotte my fav NBA team. We lived there for the 88-89 kickoff, and followed the team closely during the LJ, Zo, Gill, Curry & Mugsy years.
Re: Tobey, as big a Tony Bennett fan as I am, Mike wasn't a great fit for his system. Mike always played what I'd consider limited minutes at UVa, because he just lacked the quickness/athleticism to do what Bennett needs his bigs to do in our system. That said, I always thought he could be a better pro than his college stats reflected.
You can't teach 7 feet, and he has a very soft touch, and is pretty offensively skilled. Big thing with Mike is making sure he's dialed in every night, which could be a challenge over a long season. He could look like an All-American one night, and completely disappear the next...his consistency probably frustrated our fans more than anything. I'm obviously pulling for him...he's a great kid, with the potential to be pretty good.
