If that's true, it should be the easiest decision Mark A. has had to make. Hell, throw him an extra mil on top of what he's offered elsewhere as a thank you.

Yep, I've never been a Mark is cheap guy but if this stays under $8 mil then there is absolutely no reason to not retain him

I guess if he is willing to have Brewers match that means he likely doesn't 100% want to leave. If he gets in that 7-9M/year range, pressure is going to be on to win big now. If organization wants to soft rebuild, do you want to spend double to triple on the Manager role? I want CC to stay but can also understand if Brewers pass IF want to retool roster. CC also knows the fan base will be pissed at Mark A, not him.

If that’s the case, just pay him whatever he wants

Not sure if that was directed at my post, but I’m all for paying Managers alot more than they get. And if the Brewers goal is to build on the current team —- absolutely pay CC what he wants.
My angle is more cost vs benefit “IF” the team wants to rebuild. Is it worth paying a Manager 7-10M/year on a 3-4 year deal if plan to sell off guys like Burnes/Adames/Woodruff/Williams for a soft rebuild the next few years? I can certainly see the thought process of finding a new candidate that is 1/3 the price and maybe a great fit with a young roster. Its not my money so I dont care, but I can see the thought process if Mark A doesnt want to spend an additional 5m/year on a Manager for a team built to win 70-80/games IF they rebuild.

But to your point, it is crazy how underpaid MLB managers are. It is such a high profile thankless job at times and its not as easy as many think it is. When things are good, its the players. When its bad, its the Manager and coaches. Everyone second guesses you after the fact. Managing big egos, etc. the fact some of these Managers are under 1M/year is bonkers and that majority are under a mid tier relief pitchers is laughable.

That was really interesting. We know in the NFL & NBA there are a handful of coaches who make over 10 mil/year. The highest in MLB was 5 mil? That's wildly low

Odd timing, just got an email from Gabe Kapler for the first time since 2017 today. It was for his blog, but the blog hasn't been updated since May of 2022. Weird.

If the Brewers elect not to match, what's the general feeling here? Gross mis-management? Understanding?
I know most just didn't think he'd stay at all.

Good question. For me it will be disappointing if they let him walk and then run it back with same team vs rebuild. If they go rebuild route, I can understand letting him go if the deal gets in that 8M+ range per year. Anything less will be disappointing to not retain. Mark A knows he will get killed if they let him walk if have a chance to match though. I think unless its like 9-10M, they match especially if can do 5 years or something.

It’d be a very dumb decision if they elect not to match

Heyman says the Mets see $8 mil as unrealistic given the current leaders in manager salary make $4 mil now that Francona is gone. Decision expected in the next day or two

Weird that the Mets would balk at $8 million given how they piss money away.

Haggling over money for a guy known to be best in the league is so stupid.
