Re: 23-24 Stat Tracking
Jalen Suggs is now No 1 in the NBA in defensive EPM.
Goga is No. 3
With JI at 13, 3 of the top 15 defensive players in the league play for the Magic.

Do any other teams have this distinguished honor?
Does JI stats count towards the league overall?

Nobody else has 3. OKC, MIN and NYK each have 2 in the top 15. So between the 4 teams, 9 of the top 15 defensive players.
Not sure what u mean by the JI question.

OKC has an MVP candidate and a budding two-way star in the top 5 defensively, so I think they've got us beat there. But it's still good news.

Re: 23-24 Stat Tracking
JI's individual defensive rating game to game is absurdly consistent for the modern NBA where even the worst teams can get randomly hot during a given 15 minutes stretch. He's gone over a month (11 games since November 9th) without having a defensive rating higher than 109.7, and in this period he has had 6 games where his defensive rating was 85 or lower. For comparison, the best defense in the league currently has 106.8 defensive rating. And he is doing it while playing most of his minutes with Mo and Ingles (I love both but they are very far from lockdown defenders).

So 45-37 in their last 82 games. Not bad considering we also tanked the last few games of last season. Hopefully we can finish the season with atleast 45 wins.

I like this idea of a rolling 82 game record.Residual-Heat wrote:Residual-Heat wrote:Its been 80 games since our **** 5-20 start last season. In those 80 games, we are now 45-35, 2 more games and we get an 82 game sample size or what is the equivalent of a full season.

We should make up some ground during the 8 game home stand after the all-star break.

We went 2-3 and dropped 1 spot. Cavs are the biggest movers, jumping 4 spots. It's extremely tight between Cavs, Knicks, and Nets. Basketball Reference projections based on 1,000 simulations of the regular season.

99% on that list! Maybe the Pacers over the Nets, or the Heat over the Pacers, but the top-6 is absolutely locked in for this week in their respective slots.
The most boggling team for me is not the Bulls, but the Hawks. Something has to give in A-town. Their season is being wasted.

Cavs are interesting. Garland and Mobley are young studs, Mitchell is a star, and Jarrett is a solid power center. Good case study in the risks involved when you consolidate and accelerate your build.
You are spot on about the Hawks. Another year as a play-in team is a huge red flag.

Re: 23-24 Stat Tracking
At the halfpoint mark of the season Paolo has the worst on/off rating on the team by some margin at -11.6. Mostly due to defense, we are way better defensively when he is on the bench (103.6 DRTG) compared to when he plays (112.6 DRTG). Is this anything?
Obviously a big part of this is that his backup is Isaac the defensive savant. We should keep in mind that 112.6 DRTG is very good taken in isolation, that would be the 8th best defense in the league. And when he is surrounded by plus defenders like in the most used starting lineup Paolo is not tanking the defence by being the weakest link, the Paolo-Franz-AB-Suggs-Goga lineup has an excellent DRTG of 104.9, especially considering they play almost exclusively against other teams' starters. The problems begin when Paolo is played together with some of our weaker defenders like Mo (117.8 DRTG together), Houstan (116.9 DRTG together) and Cole (114.1 DRTG).
On the other hand, the bench leaders Isaac and Ingles have the best at 13.8 and 10.6 respectfully. Mosley's strategy seems to be is to intentionaly put weaker strarting lineups when there are injuries (which is always the case for us) and try to win by domintaing the minutes when the bench units come in.
In other news, we are down to 23rd in offensive rating. I am tired of this team never even making the Top 20 in this. Almost all of the teams below us in this category are blatantly tanking.

Re: 23-24 Stat Tracking
Magic currently have 7 players in the Top 100 by Estimated EPM. 1st time since their records began, I believe. When you consider an average team would have 5 in the top 150....
Franz
Goga
JI
Suggs
Paolo
Moe
Wendell
Massive gap between them and the next player (Harris at #240), which tells us nothing we didn't know already.

With JI at 13, 3 of the top 15 defensive players in the league play for the Magic.
Not sure how valid this is when #3 in the league is collecting DNPs on a defensive minded team

That was from when Goga was starting. The EPM develops week to week as games get played. Goga still scores v highly defensively for the games he has played - 96th percentile. Suggs also has dropped to 96th percentile!
Edit: Sorry, I see your point now. Well, I'd argue our paint defense was much better with Goga than with WCJ. EPM reflects that. Magic is getting way more help from Isaac now than they were then.
