On one hand I can't imagine a team stupid enough to draft Edey, but I've said that about slow, plodding bigs who dominated in college so many times I've lost count, and yet someone always does. It never fails.

KOC's mock has Sheppard at number 1. Someone is crazier for Sheppard than I am.
I had Risacher at number 1 because he seems to have a higher upside as a scorer, greater impact on defense, and the ability to create more mismatches than Sheppard.
I'm not high on G League guys who can't shoot; I find that players who lag behind in IQ and shooting often end up in the G League to mask their flaws. Therefore, I'm not particularly optimistic about Holland and Buzelis. Similarly, I'm not keen on Salaun or Castle because they struggle to shoot and score, appearing more like pure role players to me.
If forced to choose, I'd probably rank Dilinger sixth and Sarr seventh, behind Risacher, Sheppard, Clingan, Knecht, and Topic, with Dilinger possibly replacing Topic with the 5th pick.

I believe Zach Edey has a role in the game, similar to Boban (crazy advance stats at his peak) and Kornet (plays high impact defense now for Celts). When used correctly, these types of players can make a significant impact. However, their limitation lies in their inability to be flexible enough for a team to play them significant minutes, as there are certain matchups where they become liabilities on the court.
This highlights the challenge of the center position in today's game. Nowadays, centers need to be nimble and agile, strong enough to hold their own against players like Jokic and Embiid, capable of spacing the floor to allow for drives by positions 1-4, adept at scoring in the paint against smaller defenders when switches occur, and a lob threat in pick-and-roll situations.
That's also why I don't like drafting bigs high in the draft who can't meet all or most of the requirements needed for the center position in today's game.

I don't disagree with any of that, but what you described is a mid-late 2nd round or UDFA type player who ends up in the right system. I'll be surprised if someone doesn't fall for the national media man-crush on Edey and waste a 1st on him.

I don't watch a lot outside of the SEC before the NCAA's and know nothing of the foreign guys, but the two players I'd take in a heartbeat are Sheppard and Knecht, both of whom live, breathe, and eat ball and who you know what you're getting. I'd shy away from Ignite players until I actually see one become a big time NBA player and live up to his draft position.

If I was a team that only had a 20 mpg C, I'd definitely be interested in Edey. Take Dallas for instance. Derek Lively is a bouncy, lob and block C that can't do much else. Edey would be a perfect 15-20 mpg changeup for him.

But would you use a 1st for that? I don't dispute that he'll find a place in the league, but it will be in a role that you can generally get in a mid-late 2nd or UDFA.

I don't think there's a huge difference between the guys from range 20 through 40. It many instances, it can be more beneficial to have guys on a 1st round contract. More team-control.

Roy Hibbert almost single-handily won a playoff series against a far superior Heat team just due to the other team having not matchup to counter him.
With teams going so light on bigs these days, having an Edey in your pocket to unleash in the halfcourt of a playoff series could be a game-changer.

Re: 2023-2024 College Basketball / NBA Draft
Personally, I believe that the way you utilize assets such as cap space or draft picks cannot be rigidly defined because context matters. For example, if a player like Zach Edey could be the missing piece for a team to elevate to contender status, then using a first-round pick for him would be justified. I'm not suggesting that Luke Kornet is the missing piece for the Celtics, but if they've addressed all their needs and only lack a big center to complement rim protectors like Al or KP, then using a first-rounder for him would make sense.
However, for us, with Reed and his $8 million contract, it makes less sense.

After his flop and fake injury from the court storming? I’ll pass.

The Western Conference is usually the more progressive conference.
Majority of the best Cs in the west are non-shotblockers who excel in playmaking (Jokic, Sengun, Sabonis).
Kyle Filipowski is a solid passer who might become a stud playmaker at the NBA level.

Stephon Castle looks like a dude, but man, guys that play PG, SG, and SF have to be able to shoot and he just can't.

Once i see him being projected at the lottery, i can’t help but shake my head to how the hype machine works

Reminds me of a WORSE version of Jared Culver.
Nice size, decent playmaker. Cannot shoot.

I'm fairly high on Culver; I believe he's a better shooter and scorer than Castle. If you draft Culver that high, I think you'd be right seven times out of ten. He's a player I wouldn't be surprised to see become decent once he reaches a certain age, similar to Robert Covington.

I'm not sure if the NBA considers him a prospect or not, but Cam Spencer stands out whenever I watch Uconn.

Nobody on Purdue in double figures except Edey. He's carrying this team. Missed a key free throw down the stretch, though.

@negrodamus
Terrance Shannon has developed into a really good basketball player. Do you think his legal issues will prevent him from being drafted?
