Tankathon has us at 17, I think the tiebreakers are linked to the head-to-head win/loss between the teams tied.
Our friends at Wikipedia have the following “The tiebreaker criteria are as follows: Head-to-head record; better record in games with the tied teams. Division record; better record in games against teams in its own division (Only if the teams are in the same division).”?

It makes sens that the playoff tie-breakers also determine the draft order. Imagine the 6ers (for example) being tied with the Pacers but having to accept the 7th seed and the play-in tournament, but still having to coin-flip with the Pacers to potentially also get a lower pick. Not fair. If you are going to seed the 6ers lower in the playoffs, they deserve the better pick.

Those apply to playoff seeding
Draft positioning is coin flips

I’ll buy that, so does that mean there’s still a chance the pacers get coin flipped into the play in and loose both games leaving us with pick #14?

It takes place after the play-in i.e. after we know who is tied up or not; there's a not insignificant chance the tiebreaker goes from 4 teams to 2 and thus you're looking at a range of 18-19 instead of 16-19 due to an upset from a 9/10 seed making it in; the non-lottery 1st round picks' order goes from worst to best record amongst all playoff teams i.e. Celtics will have the 30th pick aka the worst 1st after achieving the best record in the regular season.

Don't give people any ideas... I'm still getting over people trying to tell me that the Koloko pick was the same as having the 1st rounder that year to justify the Thad trade lol.

It almost goes without saying that there’s a difference..you just logically have more opportunities/players to pick from and if you’re gonna catch someone sliding in the draft of course you’re more likely to be the team that can capitalize.
Ie/ Collier, Walter, Ware, Salaun etc are all expected to go anywhere between 10-20. If we’re lucky one of them slides all the way to 20 but good chance they don’t as they’re mainly projected at least a few spots before 20. Odds are you catch at least one of them, if not a couple available at 16. I mean at the extreme did it make a difference for MIL to have the 15th pick that was Giannis or HOU (trading for) and getting Sengun at 16?!?
I’m obviously not saying any of those guys are that level but of course it COULD make a substantial difference in whether the team even had the opportunity or not to draft a particular prospect who was available at 16 that isn’t there at 20. Of course someone could slide to 20+ and turn out better than anyone in 10-20 range too lol buuut what if another Giannis, Sengun, Kawhi is sitting there at the middle of the lottery and just didn’t quite fall far enough?!? Even if it were more a 2nd or 3rd tier level star, you’d still wish our team at least had the opportunity and that’s how people say whatever team is “lucky” to draft whatever player but we can’t be lucky if it’s not even an option.

You can try to downplay Kessler but he’s one of the best rim protectors in the league (better than Yak) and we also likely wouldn’t have ironically needed* to trade this pick for Jakob and not have to ever worry about conveying anything…and not overpaying Poeltl on a contract that will be hard to move, meanwhile Kessler would be cheaper right now and perfectly on Scottie’s timeline to grow, develop with him for years to come. That could’ve had a more substantial impact than you’re trying to portray it to be.

Does it not seem a bit odd that since they introduced the "play-in" that draft position is sketchy including the anti tanking lotto balls thing. Good teams like Miami are on the bubble because they did not finish 6 or better. Bad teams that have no business having a way in are brought into the drama past the 8th seed. This all feels like when leagues dickered with best of 3 or best of 5 formats. Frankly I hate the play in. Season's coming down to single games feels like high school or college tournaments. Even the in season tournament is a nothing bar. Is this the best the league can do? Save for lotto balls that got us Scottie the play in and in season tournament seems like bubble recovery and extra lights, more smoke and new mirrors.
