Avery wasn't named starter over Ray as a punishment to Ray or anything like that. Avery was named a starter because he was a better fit with the starting lineup because of defensive purposes and how great the chemistry was between him and Rondo. Adding to the fact that the Celtics bench scoring was awful and bringing Ray off the bench as the 6th man benefited that a lot. People also love to leave out how even though he came off the bench, Ray still played more minutes than Avery. During the last 5 minutes of a close game during crunch time when Ray was available, he was playing. Every game.
You're ignoring the Terry signing. The Celtics are obviously moving in a different direction from Ray.
Now this is Doc's words, not mine but Doc's plan was for Terry to be backup PG and Ray to be backup SG. I don't know how that would've worked but that was Doc's plan.
I don't have a problem with Ray leaving, I really don't. But some people make it seem like Ray was playing 10 minutes a game while Avery played 40. Only thing that changed was that Avery started off the games and Ray would come in 5 minutes into the game, Ray would still end up playing more minutes than Avery and still closed the games out. Think of it like Harden & Sefolosha.
The move to Bradley only happened towards the end of the year, so of course the Celtics weren't going to do anything too drastic and ruin their team chemistry. Plus Bradley was battling injuries and they were gearing up for the playoffs. I think it's pretty clear the Celtics are hoping to make him a bigger part of the team in the future and that if he stays healthy and plays well his role will only increase.
The Celtics have been looking for a quality backup for Rondo forever, and I'm sure Terry can help relieve some of that pressure every once in a while, but either way Rondo is still going to play 35+ mpg and you can be sure they didn't sign Terry to play 13 mpg. Him and Ray would have been competing for minutes.
It's a little shortsided to just look at Ray's minutes this year and assume he would have the same role 1-2 years down the line. The facts remain that they seem to want Bradley as a starter at SG, they tried to deal Ray for a younger SG during the season, and when that didn't work they went out and signed another SG during free agency.
