Should Nets stretch provision Deron?

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Sat May 2, 2015 3:33 am

With approx $43 million left on his contract, 31 years old and given Nets cap situation, would it make sense for both parties to agree to a $40 million buyout to allow for Nets to save $13 million off cap in 2015 and $14 million off cap in 2016?. Deron could sign a new 4 year deal with perhaps Dallas to replace Rondo.

Thoughts?

Deron's the only sizable contract left on the books past 2016. The Nets aren't going anywhere till then, so in 2016 if they go big and try to use ALL of the cap to create a super-team, then maybe they stretch Deron's $24M into $8M/$8M/$8M. They won't do it this summer, that would be pointless.

I wouldn't this offseason.
I'm guessing they wouldn't have enough cap room to sign anyone else, even after they stretch him (with JJ's deal).
If they waited another season, with the cap jump, and the fact that they would be only stretching $20 mill instead of $40 mill, they could probably have some cap room to play with.

I don't believe they can utilize the stretch provision If there's a buyout. If I recall, that's part of the reason Josh Smith was waived with no buyout.

But no. Deron's no head case or locker room issue.

I'm a big opponent of the wisdom of stretching. It basically takes your lumps, and spreads them out to as many years as possible. In the NBA, the name of the game is stars. And to get stars, you want as much cap room as possible at one time (and/or high draft picks, etc).

The idea of stretching Williams without a legit tier 1 fa that you need that space right now to sign it with is just dumb. And in one more year, the hit from stretching him would be considerably less. Meanwhile, this summer the team won't have any cap space anyway, whats the gain? There is none.

So, no. Definitely not. Absolutely not. And that is before considering that it would downgrade the talent on the floor.

They have either no pick or are swapping so they need to try and stay as competitive as possible. Just wouldn't make sense since that are capped out anyways.
