All-Time Fantasy Draft With FGA Limit - Meta Thread
So, this is an idea that I talked about with Dr Spaceman:
How about doing an all-time fantasy draft with everybody who ever played in the NBA being available, but your team not being allowed to take more than a certain amount of total shots? We won't have unrealistic collections of talent that have no chance of functioning well as a team.
Every player since the introduction of the shot clock in the 1954-55 season would be available (including the 2015-16 season).
You will have to draft 8 players (basically a playoff rotation - I don't think we need more than that - we'll have to find a way to give everybody some serious playing time, and it's hard to do it if you have 10 or 12 players on your team - with 8, you can still get a backup center, forward and guard, and give all of them more than 20 minutes of playing time, which is enough to make a significant impact).
Your team would be allowed 85.0 FGA (that's 10.6 FGA per player). That's just slightly above what league-average in the 2015-16 regular season was (it was 84.6 FGA).
We'll select specific seasons of every player we take.
We'll do a snake draft, and then write-ups with team strategy (plus other write-ups focusing on specific match-ups).
I'm looking for 16 general managers. Just make sure that you'll be able to stick to it, to the end. If someone stops caring, we'll try to find a replacement GM who can finish this thing with an abandoned team (and we won't wait very long before doing that, so make sure you take care of your team).
Mods - if you want to move this thread to the Fantasy Basketball board - please wait until we have a full list of participants. We can do the draft and matchups on the Fantasy Basketball board, but it's FAR easier to find people who can be interested, here, so let's just leave this thread here.

Yeah, sure. I just hope that people will stick to it this time (wasn't the case last year, unfortunately).

I'd love to! Did one of these (minus the FGA requirement) last year on a Jazz board and it was a lot of fun. I think one with fans of more different teams could be even more fun

I'm in. When will the draft start? If the 85.0 FGA cap is based on regular season, would players still be judged on their playoffs?

We'll go with regular season FGAs, playoffs will still matter in terms of player evaluation when voting occurs, we'll just ignore playoff FGA numbers for the purpose of this tournament.
Draft will start as soon as we get 16 GMs. I'll randomize draft order and make it clear how the draft list will look.

That's great! As far as judging, I thought that 14 GMs not involved in a particular matchup would just vote on every matchup (other than the one they are directly involved in, that is), but considering that you and RSCD have already expressed interest in becoming judges, I'll consider changing that voting system and adding 100% unbiased judges like you guys, assuming you're not gonna be GMs at the same time (I mean, one problem with 2-in-1, GM-judge thing, is that we could tend to side with the team that we would rather face in another round, in each pair).
That being said, I would still love it if you and RSCD became GMs, too.

One suggestion to make it a bit easier I think we should bump up the FGA a little bit (maybe to around 90?) which would be around the max from recent years, but would be much easier on some of the older era players when teams were taking 100+ FGA.

Nah, to be honest with you, I actually considered moving it DOWN a bit, to 80, not going UP. I don't want to make it easier, I want you guys to think a little harder than usual, find defensive specialists who don't need a lot of shots - if you think about it, vast majority of NBA teams have only two or three guys they really depend on, offensively, and allow them to score in a really high volume, and even when we see "super teams" being formed (which is what all of the teams in this tournament will be, anyway), guys cut down on their FGAs - look at the Celtics in '08, when Garnett, Pierce and Allen all cut down on their FGAs by a pretty significant margin - in '07, when all three of them were carrying bad teams, they averaged 56.7 combined FGAs - when they started playing together in '08, they averaged only 41.1. Even LeBron/Wade/Bosh cut down from 56.2 total, when they played for CLE/MIA/TOR in 2010, to 50.7 when all three played for MIA in 2011.
Anyway, it's possible to have two 20-25 FGA volume scorers and still surround them with a great supporting cast, if you have 85 FGAs to use.
As far as players from older eras, who played on a higher pace - it's possible to find a different version of a typically insane volume player, which may be just as good if not better than that super-high volume version - for instance, in the latest top 40 peaks project, 1967 was selected as Wilt Chamberlain's peak, and he averaged only 14.2 FGA, which is FAR from a volume scorer, even though he averaged 22.5 FGA for his career, and 30+ in four consecutive seasons (in general, "volume scoring" comes to mind very quickly when you think of Wilt, doesn't it?)
1967 Wilt looks like an absolutely fantastic player to use in this tournament, by the way. The guy who drafts him, will be a very lucky person.

Just wondering, how do the drafts work? I literally have no idea how fantasy drafts work. Like, is there seeding and that stuff, and if so, how would that be picked?
Also, what time would it be? I have apush exams coming up and I need to cram in 340 pages + 2-3 30 minute videos - 1 mock exam and a 1-2 skim sessions of a few review books in 5 days so I don't have much free time.

Oh, and also, would u take free throws into account? I mean, harden and curry are taking about the same amount. Of shots this years but harden takes more than 5 more free throws which means he definitely takes more shot attempts.
