Looks like Clemens and Bomds are heading to the hall sooner rather than later.

The HOF committee back-doored the Steroid Commissioner Bud Selig into the hall 2 weeks ago and now baseball writers are changing their votes on the players as a result.
On a side note, Tim Raines is said to be a lock. Finally. Long overdue.

I mean, why would philly do this deal? But whatever. The greasy arm has left the division, and he always owned us for whatever reason.

I'm sure Boston is going to be covering a good chunk of the $14 million owed to Bucholz this season. Phillies can always swing him at the deadline or they get a body for the season for relatively cheap. That's my best guess.

As it would turn out, they aren't paying for Clay. Boston needed to trade him on account of an arms surplus with Sale, I get that, but I don't see why Philly needed to pick up a $14M tab AND trade away a prospect in a year where they're obviously not contending.

Awesome news on Raines... hopefully Jonah Keri doesn't try and take the credit

My guess is, they hope he pitches half decent, and then trade him in july trade deadline to a contender for a better higher ceiling prospect. Kind of like what yankees did with Chappman. 'Traded some low level prospects to Reds, then trades him at deadline for high level prospects, and then on top of that, signed him back.

Hmm, that is a bit strange. Prospect capital for an iffy starter at the deadline isn't going to really be worth the $7 million but ok then Phillies. Thanks for clearing all that space under the luxury tax for the ****' Red Sox...

Re: Around the MLB 2016 Edition
That likely brings the Red Sox payroll under $200m. Nip and tuck to get under the luxury tax; they might have to move another player on a most deal.
Oddly: the contract value of our 40-man might now end up being damned near the same as the Red Sox. Using Baseball Reference's estimated arb figures, Boston's heading for about $172.5m, while we're at around $153.3m in commitments but will probably keep adding. Difference is that we're being paid $11.45m for Upton, while Boston is paying $23m to players who have been bought out or DFA'd.
It'll be worth watching whether the somewhat-more-punitive tax makes the biggest teams a little less eager to write off those deals...the Dodgers are paying nearly $50m net this season to players who aren't on their 40-man.

Boston recently picked up his 2017 option for $13M. They could have declined it if they thought he wasn't worth that much, but he's an asset with trade value even if they didn't need him. Clay had a bad year in 2016 but look at the price of pitching right now. Mike Dunn is a bad 31 year old lefty reliever projected for a 4.20 ERA who has really never been any good, not even vs lefties, and he just got $19M guaranteed.
Buccholz, as much as you may not like him, has a history of being a very good - albeit injury prone - starting pitcher. He was bad last year but in the three prior years he was worth 7.6 WAR despite missing the equivalent to an entire season's worth of games. If he's anywhere close to that good in 2017 he'll get quite a nice return in July or August after only spending $7M or so on him. If they can land a top 100 prospect for him (worth $15M minimum, and possibly a lot more) they'll be pretty happy, I'd think.

Re: Around the MLB 2016 Edition
One source insisted that the Twins were quite comfortable taking Dozier, their best position player, into the season, Arrangements were just made for him to come to Minnesota to pick up his Twins MVOP trophy on Jan. 26, and for him to participate in the team’s fan fest the following three days.
The Twins at one point sought Dodgers’ top minor-league prospect Cody Bellinger, the slick-fielding first baseman, but those efforts apparently were rebuffed. Word is the Twins have a pitching-heavy list of alternatives they’d take instead, but the Dodgers have to this point an entirely different list of prospects they’d agree to send to Minnesota.
It is known that the Dodgers hold two other top pitching prospects — Walker Buehler and Yadier Alvarez — in extremely high regard, and it’s quite likely that L.A. wouldn’t be willing to deal either of those two prospects along with De Leon. In fact, some believe the Dodgers like Buehler and Alvarez even more than De Leon despite many publications ranking De Leon higher.
The Dodgers’ farm system is stacked, so it remains quite possible the sides work this out by adding multiple pieces to the package in a compromise. But for now, they seem to be in a stare-down, possible because the Twins feel no urgency to do the deal. The Dodgers also have looked into Ian Kinsler and Logan Forsythe for second base, but Kinsler has a no-trade to L.A. and a request for an extension if dealt.
The Giants are said to have looked at Dozier, as have some other teams. But L.A., with their great farm system and second-base opening, remains the most logical landing spot — if the sides can work it out.

Alex Avila back to the Tigers for 1 year 2 million. Don't think he was ever an option as a backup catcher...but I'm happy to see signings being made rather than sitting around

Re: Around the MLB 2016 Edition
Change to unrestricted ballots of something, because the ballot backlog is getting pretty silly. Jorge Posada shouldn't be getting dumped on the first ballot. Manny Ramirez shouldn't be under 24%. Larry Walker should not be stalled in the low 20s. Next year, with the likes of Chipper and Andruw Jones, Jim Thome and Scott Rolen on the ballot, there will be far too many guys who have legitimate cases, and consequently a lot of ballots being split, which could lead to an even bigger pileup. This is idiotic.
