Sandy Alderson says Mets won’t call up Amed Rosario or Dominic Smith, pitching is priority
BY: DANIEL POPPER
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Updated: Saturday, May 20, 2017, 2:07 AM
The Mets’ top two prospects won’t be joining the big leagues any time soon.
Despite his team’s recent tailspin and an overwhelming number of injuries, general manager Sandy Alderson said Friday he does not anticipate calling up first baseman Dominic Smith or shortstop Amed Rosario, who are both enjoying dominant offensive seasons for Triple-A Las Vegas in 2017.
“There are no current plans to promote either one of them — unless one them can pitch, in which case we might reconsider,” Alderson said dryly of Rosario and Smith before the Mets’ 3-0 win over the Angels at Citi Field.
Rosario is hitting .364 with a .942 OPS, four homers, 29 RBI and eight stolen bases in 41 games so far this year. Smith, meanwhile, has followed his breakout 2016 by hitting .320 with five homers and 25 RBI in 42 games this season.
Alderson said the Mets are “very happy” with the duo’s progress. But at this stage, he doesn’t believe his club is in need of a boost at the plate.
The Mets have scored 198 runs this season, which ranks in the top half of the majors.
The problem, according to Alderson, is the pitching — particularly the bullpen. Mets relievers have compiled a 5.05 ERA in 146 innings this season.
Alderson believes the poor relief pitching is partly a function of short outings from his starters. Jacob deGrom gave his team a brief reprieve by hurling seven scoreless innings Friday night. But the problem persists.
Thus, Alderson is focused on improving his pitching, leaving Rosario and Smith to continue develop out west for now.
“Our issue is not some much on the player side of the ball as it is on the pitching side right now, and that’s where we really have to focus and stabilize,” Alderson said. “So that’s not to say that one or the other of those players wouldn’t be helpful in some way. But we don’t see that as a panacea, and we don’t see it necessarily as the right time in the overall sense of where we are and who we have currently and what we’re trying to do.”

not calling up a top project because your offense is fine is a dumb reason to not call up a top prospect.

What is the point in losing a year of control over Rosario when Cabrera is coming back soon and we're desperately hurting for pitching? If we're playing for this year then he won't make much of a difference over Cabrera and if we're playing for the future then why waste a year of control over him? Also, maybe he's not ready.

Conforto is a hitting beast. We're looking at a future triple crown winner.

Very dumb. Tell that to Ian Happ of the Cubs or Bellinger to the Dodgers. Both kids sparked their respective clubs.

Forto should be hitting third for us for the next ten years. He's our best hitter and is that good.

Conforto is amazing man. Lowered his arms a bit, but that plate recognition plus that sweet swing is a deadly combination.

What a difference from last season when he was over-swinging at almost everything. Some sabermatricians subscribe to the theory that the team's best hitter should hit second in the order. But being the old f*ck that I am, I'm kinda old school and think he looks like a no. 3 hitter to me.

I'm old school as well, but Forto should bat 2nd. The middle of your lineup is lefty heavy so it breaks it up for starters. Secondly, Conforto's plate discipline and legs are some of the best on the Mets team. 3rd, it gets him an extra 20 or so AB's for the rest of the season. 4th, you put Ces behind him and the pitches he gets are going to be a lot better.
